The picture is quite typical of Venetianov by combining the genre and portrait. The image of a peasant woman, realistically reliable, at the same time rises in a certain generalization and monumentality. In the view of the artist, it is the people who is the bearer of the moral principle – hard work, religiosity, the ability to strong affection. The gesture of a young woman holding a ring in her hands and with sadness considering the underwear, probably hints at the existence of some kind of sadness. The artistic advantages of the picture were so obvious that it was acquired by a recognized connoisseur of painting in.AND. Kokorinov for their gallery. In 1870, along with the best part of the collection of Kokorinov, the picture was acquired for the personal collection of Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich, future emperor Alexander III.
