The portrait was written in Rome and sent to St. Petersburg addressed to Empress Elizabeth Alekseevna as a report. Then he exhibited with great success in the Hermitage. "Young gardener" indicates a change in the manner of the artist, undoubtedly under the influence of the work of old masters. Kiprensky himself called among his first inspirers Rafael. The picture, however, has a romantic mood, bordering on sentimentality, a plan of hidden personal experiences, characteristic of the works of European romantics.
