The portrait was written by the professor of the Academy of Arts Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky in 1912, when the Dowager Empress was already over 60, so the artist used a photo of 1883, in which Maria Fedorovna was captured in a Russian dress with a diamond necklace and a diadem.
