The picture was written on the plot of Portuguese history and poems l.AT. Camoens "Lusiades". Inessa de Castro, the Morganatic spouse of the Portuguese infant Don Pedro, was killed with the consent of King Alfonso by his courts of Alvaro Gonzalves, Pedro Coelho and Lope Pchaeko. According to contemporaries, the picture was written by Bryullov in Milan in 17 days and was shown at the exhibition in the same year.
