Perhaps not a single modern tropinin has so many picturesque images of colleagues – artists. But not only goodwill, but also amazing nobility to shine in the whole appearance of the largest master of the cutting engraving of the first half of the 19th century. Yes, despite the simple surname received from the mother – a serf peasant woman, according to the father of Utkin of noble origin. He is the son of Count Mikhail Nikitich Muravyov, an educator of the Grand Dukes of Alexander and Konstantin Pavlovich. In 1785, Catherine II invited a famous writer and academician, teach his grandchildren Russian literature, history and moral philosophy. Utkin’s consolidated brothers were the Decembrists Nikita and Alexander Muravyov, and Kuzen is a famous poet Konstantin Nikolaevich Batyushkov.

Utkin Nikolai Ivanovich (1780, Tver – 1863, St. Petersburg).
Engraver. From 1785 – a pupil of IAX, studied with g. And. Ugryumova and and. With. Clauber. In 1796 he was awarded Malaya Silver, in 1798 – a large silver medals. In 1800 he received a small gold medal and a certificate of the 1st degree, in 1802-a large gold medal. In 1803-1808, a pensioner of the Iakh in France. Appointed (1810), academician (1814) for portrait a. B. Kurakina from the original w.-B. Reno. From 1815 he taught at the IAX, in 1817-1850 he led the engraving class. Advisor to IAX (since 1818). Member of the Stockholm, Antwerp and Dresden Academies of Arts.
