A multi -figure portrait rare for Russian art of the first half of the 19th century, which simultaneously represent a genre picture.

Artists and writers, close friends of the author of the work are depicted: artists Grigory Chernetsov (1802–1865; at the samovar), his brother Nikanor Chernetsov (1805–1879; with a pipe), Valerian Langer (1800?–1865?; with a glass) and Andrey Sapozhnikov (1795–1855; on the back of the bed), as well as a writer, journalist and collector Pavel Svinin (1787–1839; with a book).
