The artist is Surikov
Ataman Stepan Razin is the leader of the peasant uprising that covered the entire Volga region in 1669-1671. The uprising was brutally crushed, and Razin was publicly executed in Moscow. Razin’s personality left a deep mark in folk memory – songs and legends were created about him, and dreams of a better and free life were connected with him. And therefore, probably not by chance, Surikov directs the stroke of the chieftain to the endless Volzhsky scope.
