M. AT. Nesterov saw the salvation of Russia in search of a moral ideal. Its bearer for the artist was Sergius of Radonezh, the founder of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, ascetic, miracle worker, intercessor of the Russian land. The image of Sergius of Radonezh worried the artist throughout his life. He studied his activities in chronicles and chronicles, as a result more than 15 significant works were created dedicated to "The abbot of the Russian land". Among them: "Vision of the lad Bartholomew"; "Youth of St. Sergius", 1892-1897; Triptih "Proceedings of St. Sergius", 1896-1897; "Rev. Sergius", 1899; Sketches “Farewell to St. Sergius with Prince Dmitry Donskoy”, 1898-1899 and others. He expressed his attitude to the created image as follows: "I wrote the life of a good Russian man of the XIV century, sensitive to nature and its beauty,… who loved his homeland and strove for the truth.
