The artist is Nesterov

In the late 1890s, the artist conceived a cycle of paintings about the tragic fate of a Russian woman. The images of the heroines were inspired by his novel p. And. Melnikova-Pechersky "In forests".

The artist shows a sad procession of the inhabitants of a little monastery, lost among dense forests, escorting a young girl to the monastery. Its last way before renouncing worldly life, it passes along with a solemn procession along the sandy path in the early morning. "The topic is sad, but reviving nature, Russian north, quiet and delicate … makes a touching picture, at least for those who live a tender feeling", – wrote the artist.

For this, the canvas in 1898 Mikhail Nesterov was awarded the title of academician.
